Usability testing gets a bad reputation. People think it’s expensive, requires fancy labs, and takes months to set up. That’s not how we work. We’re going to walk through a practical approach that won’t break the bank and will actually give you insights you can use next week.
Why Testing Matters — But You Already Know That
Here’s the thing: you can guess what users want, or you can watch them actually use your product. One of those is way more reliable.
We’re not talking about running elaborate research programs with 200 participants and statistical significance. We’re talking about real observation — watching someone interact with your interface and paying attention to where they struggle, where they hesitate, where they smile.
Most teams do some form of testing already. But here’s what often goes wrong: they don’t know what to look for, they ask leading questions, or they collect data and then don’t know what to do with it. That’s what we’ll fix.
Finding the Right People — Without Overthinking It
Recruitment doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t need a recruitment agency. You need 5 to 8 people who actually use (or would use) the thing you’re building.
Quick Recruitment Rules

- Mix it up: include someone who’s tech-savvy and someone who’s not
- Pay them something — even 25 shows respect for their time
- Schedule sessions 3-5 days apart so you can adjust questions
You can recruit from LinkedIn, Twitter, your existing user base, or local universities. Post in Slack communities. Ask friends of friends. The key: don’t just grab anyone. Spend 15 minutes screening to make sure they actually fit.
Running the Session — The Real Work
Set the tone (first 2 minutes)
You’re testing the product, not them. Say it out loud. People get nervous. They think they’re supposed to be good at using your app. Relax them. “We’re going to watch you use this thing, you’ll probably find some confusing stuff, and that’s exactly what we want to see.”
Give them a realistic task (5-15 minutes)
Don’t say “explore the interface.” That’s useless. Instead: “You want to buy a blue winter coat in size M. Go ahead and do that.” Something concrete. Something they’d actually want to do with your product.
Stay quiet and observe (this is hard)

Ask follow-up questions (5 minutes)
After the task: “What was confusing?” “What did you expect to happen?” “Would you use this?” Keep it natural. You’re not interrogating them.
Extracting Insights — The Part Everyone Skips
You’ve run 6 sessions. You’ve got videos, notes, and a lot of observations. Now what? Don’t just file it away. Don’t wait for a “research report.” You need actionable insights in the next few days.
Watch your videos or review notes the same day. Write down the problems you saw. Not “users were confused about navigation” — be specific: “Three out of six people looked for a search function at the top of the page and didn’t find it because we put it in the sidebar.”
Pattern Recognition
If two people have the same problem, it’s a pattern. If three people have it, it’s a priority fix. Don’t obsess over one person’s feedback unless it’s a critical safety issue.
Share findings with your team within a week. Show clips if you can. Walk through specific moments. “Watch what happens when this person tries to reset their password — they click here, then they’re lost.” Real moments are more convincing than a 40-slide deck.
The Mistakes Everyone Makes
We’ve all been there. You run tests, you get excited about the findings, and then… nothing changes. Here’s what typically derails testing efforts:
- Leading questions: “This button is pretty clear, right?” is useless. Ask “What would you click here?”
- Testing too late: If you test when the design is 90% done, you can’t change much. Test earlier. Test often.
